Make your wellbeing a Q2 priority to achieve success.
As you assess your Q1 results and set your goals for the next quarter, make your physical wellbeing a Q2 priority. Not only will doing so benefit you but you’ll perform better at work too. Who knows, maybe there is a promotion, a new job or a new career path in your future as a result. Excited? Let’s start by assessing your Q1 results.
How did Q1 go for you?
Whether you set New Years resolutions or not, you probably initiated some changes in your life at the beginning of the year. Are those changes working for you? If you’re not sure, take some time to reflect and ask yourself some simple questions now:
1/ What worked?
2/ What can you do to build on your results?
3/ What didn’t work?
4/ What can you do differently?
Achieving your Goals
When I paused to assess my Q1 results, I initially felt a little flat. I made some progress but not as much as I hoped. How I felt about my progress changed when I got an unsolicited comment from a client who hadn’t seen me since last year.
One of my health goals is to achieve my best body. What that means to me now is different than what is meant to me earlier in life. Now it’s more about how I feel and move than how I look. However, looking better is one of the additional rewards that you often get when you set out to improve your physical wellbeing.
Physical Wellbeing
How am I getting results? I attribute it mainly to consistency because there is nothing extraordinary about my routine. My routine primarily consists of Pilates classes, walking and eating a plant-based diet. I am also eating more intuitively.
It’s working for me. What I mean by that is that it’s not hard for me to do and it doesn’t feel restrictive. Finding what works for you is the secret to achieving your best body too. Whatever “best body” means to you.
That’s why it’s so important to periodically check in with yourself on what’s working and what’s not so that you can tweak your routines. Expressing your routines as Simple Rules makes them memorable in the moment which translates into being more consistent. Tweaking your rules over time helps you to continually progress towards the results that you want so that you achieve your goals.
Walking the Wellness Talk
You may have seen the video of me walking my way to wellness during an online meeting last Friday. I’ve added a standing desk and walking pad to get more steps into my workday.
I think of it as the multi-vitamin equivalent to my workout routine. Feels good but not as good as an outdoor walk. My Apple Watch, Series 9 didn’t automatically capture the movement because it didn’t elevate my heart rate. That and I was often resting my arms.
Some of my wellness colleagues on the call wondered whether it was safe to use in the workplace. Reportedly, the benefits outweigh the risk of injury. If you’re interested in trying it, the desk and walking pad are surprisingly affordable.
It takes a few minutes to get into a smooth rhythm but once you find the right pace, it’s easy to incorporate into your day especially during calls and online meetings. Taking breaks and mixing up your position will help prevent injuries and build reflection into your day.
Why the Path
The other things that may come up when you check in with yourself is doubt. Did you set the right goals and are you on the right path? Why the path is something that we have to continually ask ourself in business and in life.
Wellbeing is a good path for both individuals and businesses. The why is pretty simple and may sound trite but when you feel good, you do good work and that is good for business. There is a direct link between wellbeing and productivity which is why making wellbeing a Q2 priority is a good thing to do.
Developing a culture that supports wellbeing in the workplace requires a plan and a culture of wellbeing is needed to execute on the plan. With that said, we can all help move the needle on wellbeing by simply walking the talk and inspiring others to do the same.
With that a question… how are you going to walk the wellness talk this week?
