Must haves and must dos for good mental health.
Knowing your musts, must haves and must dos, can help you make good decisions and maintain good mental health. Think of it as your simple rules for good mental health.
The concept of musts surfaced in my own life when faced with a life changing decision because it meant something else needed to give. No matter how efficient or how leveraged your time is with professional services, time is a constraint. When constrained by time. something has to give but what? We all have to answer the question which is why knowing your musts is a must for making good decisions and maintaining good mental health.
Ten things that you can do to maintain good mental health
The list is not exhaustive but it’s a good starting point. It allows you to think creatively about your levers and identify opportunities to make changes that will give you more of what you want and need.
1/ Keep your commute short
2/ Keep the number of stressors in check
3/ Develop nurturing relationships
4/ Laugh
5/ Eat well
6/ Exercise regularly
7/ Read books
8/ Spend time in nature
9/ Get a pet or find another way to have animals apart of your life.
10/ Go to church for spiritual and/or community connection.
What are the must haves and must dos
The must haves are the things that you need to do every day or every week to maintain your own mental health. The must dos are the things that you want to experience in life to make it more fulfilling. When adding more demands on your life, think about how to use your musts to balance the demands. You may be able to combine elements from the list. For example, my musts are combined into four things:
1/ A walkable city and safe location
Access to sidewalks and paths, safe neighborhoods with shops and restuarants and well traveled routes makes a big difference to quality of life. Sunshine, fresh air and exercise makes people feel happy.
2/ Time to workout and play
Connecting with friends on the mat, for a game or other activity helps to maintain relationships while also providing the health benefits of exercise and play.
3/ A beautiful place to connect
Space, whether a club or community center, with plenty of natural light adds to the experience and benefits of indoor workouts and other activities.
4/ Travel
Travel adds a unique richness to life. Annual vacations are now giving way to quarterly recharges, sabbaticals, work from anywhere and work enabled travel. For many people, it’s just a matter of deciding when and how to experience travel.
Musts are personal
