Persistent and consistent are qualities for success.

The difference between being persistent and consistent is subtle but both are important qualities if you want to achieve success. So let’s start with some definitions to better understand the qualities.

Persistent

1/ What does it mean to be persistent?

Persistence is the the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people. The state of occurring or existing is beyond the usual, expected or normal timeframe.

2/ Why is persistence important?

Persistent people have a goal or vision in mind that motivates and drives them. They are often dreamers and visionaries who see their lives as having a higher purpose than simply earning a living. Their vision is deeply ingrained, and they focus on it constantly and with great emotion and energy.

3/ Persistence has a dark side.

People who have a strong vision for what they think will lead to a better future often have a hard time restraining their positive energy and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, it’s the lack of restraint and awareness that can strain relationships and alienate people.

Consistent

1/ What does it mean to be consistent?

Consistency develops routines and standards for behavior and treatment of others. For entrepreneurs and leaders, it helps to build momentum towards their vision or goal.

2/ Why is consistency important?

People like consistency because it gives them comfort in knowing what to expect. It also assures people that entrepreneurs, leaders and business partners will follow through on what they say, do what they promise and try their best to make things right when things go wrong.

3/ Consistency can have a dark side too.

People often get stuck doing the same thing, the same way for too long. It’s called the status quo. Maintaining the status quo limits growth for both people and companies and threats their long term success.

Persistent and consistent are two sides of the same coin.

We often think entrepreneurs can’t be leaders and leaders can’t be entrepreneurs. It’s a questionable belief because there is overlap in the qualities of both and to achieve success, entrepreneur and leaders need both or need one another. Hence the titles: Co-CEO and Co-Founder.

1/ Entrepreneur qualities: Passion, disciplined, confidence, open minded, self-starter and resilient

When we think of entrepreneurs, we think of the courage they have to venture into the unknown and their drive to help others see the way forward no matter what happens. For many entrepreneurs, the journey can be pretty lonely until there are glimmers of buy-in. Buy-in is the early sign they have created or uncovered something others will value.

2/ Leadership qualities: Trust, confidence, humility, commitment, communication and consistent

When we think of leaders, we think of their steadfastness in fighting the daily battles to make the vision a reality. They have the people, processes and systems in place to engage others in a shared vision for the future. Leaders need to “continuously cultivate the village” to achieve success.

Persistent + Consistent wins the day

Persistence helps you stay the course through all the ups and downs. Consistency helps you realize results and build the support of those around you.

Whether you are a visionary entrepreneur, leader or just trying to achieve a big goal in your life, use both sides of the coin. Be persistent and consistent in your approach or find someone who can be the other side of your coin.
