How to achieve your goals with better habits.

If you’re trying to create better habits this year, set realistic timelines for each type of habit so that you stay the course and eventually, achieve your goals.

Five insights to help you establish better habits

1/ Be patient

It takes longer than you might think to develop a new habit and the more complex the habit, the longer it takes. It takes most people about 66 days to develop a new habit. A complex habit such as an exercise habit can take as long as six months to develop.

2/ Consistency is key

Consistent daily repetition is the biggest factor influencing whether a behavior will become part of an automatic daily routine. Start by establishing the habit and then build on it or refine it over time.

To develop an exercise routine, get into the habit of putting your workout clothes on, walking around the block or driving to the gym every day. Those simple acts will help you develop the identity of a person that works out every day.

3/ Create a specific plan

Most people set a goal which is the what but then fail to address the how. Without addressing the how, the goal is simply wishful thinking. Establishing a plan ensures you allocate the time in your day and/or week and gives you permission to use that time. The plan should also help you monitor progress, make adjustments and help you stay the course.

4/ Make it easy to make the right choice.

Set up your environment to make it easy to make executing on the new habit easy. Every week when you’re grocery shopping is a chance to set up your environment. Eliminate the ultra processed foods and buy fresh whole foods.

If you like to sit on the couch after work, leave your workout shoes by the door, put a visual cue close to the couch and/or stand and move one body part during commercials to feel more energetic.

5/ Reward yourself during the task

Build rewards into your new routine. Rewards for those developing an exercise habit, might be listening to your favorite books, walking with a friend or joining a group class. Walking with a friend or group class increases the accountability and makes your workout social and fun which is good for your mind, body and soul.
